“Seriously, they’re incredible,” I said as I carefully put the model back down. “Sorry, mine look shit in comparison.”
“Why are you apologizing?” Jonathan asked with a raised eyebrow, as if my apology had totally baffled him. “I just happen to have a lot of free time outside of work, no other hobbies, and no social life.”
Reading Licked feels like a warm hug or, appropriately, a comforting dish of your favorite dessert. What makes this book shine so brightly is how deeply relatable the characters are. Alfie’s internal imposter syndrome—constantly worrying if he threw his stable life away in the pursuit of unpredictable happiness—hits hard for anyone who has ever dreamed of a fresh start.
Jonathan is an absolute treasure of a main character. He is a beautifully complex subversion of tropes: visually striking and fiercely alternative in his gothic style, yet deeply shy, relationship-inexperienced, and bracingly honest. Watching them navigate their mutual attraction with an absolute abundance of green flags is incredibly heartwarming.
The supporting cast also steals every scene they are in. Alfie’s friends Milo and Darcy provide hilarious, chaotic energy (complete with Milo drawing sexy pin-up chalkboard signs for the shop). Meanwhile, Jonathan’s bosses, Laurie and the lace-and-frills-wearing mortician Theo, act as the ultimate supportive, meddling matchmakers.

🍦 Ice Cream for Your Soul: Why You Need to Read ‘Licked’ by Charlie Novak 🍦
If you are looking for a sweet, low-angst, high-fluff palate cleanser to rescue you from a reading slump, look no further. Licked by Charlie Novak (the fabulous first book in the brand-new Lick It! series) is the ultimate feel-good contemporary MM romance. Set in the charming British seaside town of Heather Bay, this book serves up the perfect scoop of nerdy passion, incredible character chemistry, and mouth-watering ice cream.
📖 The Plot: A Double Dose of Fate
The story revolves around Alfie, a broad, cozy-hoodie-wearing former accountant who recently uprooted his life from Sheffield. He surrendered his soul-crushing corporate career to open Lick It!, an artisan ice cream parlor, alongside his lifelong best friends Darcy and Milo. On his very last free weekend before the grand opening chaos begins, Alfie treats himself to a tabletop wargaming tournament in Leeds.
Enter Jonathan Bell: a gorgeously striking, incredibly talented miniature painter who works as a receptionist at a local gothic funeral home. Dressed to the nines in a leather chest harness, pinstripe trousers, and flawless makeup, Jonathan completely reduces Alfie’s social skills to zero. They share an incredibly intense, hyper-focused match, followed by an impromptu hotel bar dinner where they talk for hours and forge an instant, effortless connection.
The catch? Alfie is so utterly dazed by Jonathan that he completely forgets to ask for his contact information before driving home. Just as Alfie is wallowing in despondency and anticipating a lifetime of futile social media stalking, fate steps in. On a sunny Friday afternoon during Lick It!’s grand opening, Jonathan walks straight through the parlor doors with his wildly eccentric bosses. As it turns out, they both live and work right in Heather Bay.
The core conflict of this slice-of-life romance is wonderfully low-angst: it focuses on two shy, slightly lonely men learning how to communicate their desires and trying to balance the hectic, exhausting hours of a new business with a blossoming first love.
